Rachel Maddow put into context the degree to which the mass shooting epidemic has gotten out of control.

Gun murders, mass gun murders are so common in this country that it’s entirely possible that you might survive a mass shooting only to endure another one. That is a thing that happens now in our country. It is statistically possible. Gun murders are, in fact, so common in this country that the shooter in one attack could shoot and kill 11 people, drive to a nearby parking lot to kill himself at the site of where another mass shooting had occurred just a few years prior.

The family vacation visiting Tennessee today when she and her family end up in the middle of another mass shooting. The fact that reporters are covering shootings at their own kids’ schools, that people are surviving multiple mass shootings before they are legally allowed to drink, these aren’t crazy coincidences. This is a measure of the prevalence of this problem in our country. This kind of stuff is happening over and over and over again because mass shootings really do happen that frequently in the United States.

If Republicans were not moved to act after the murder of kindergarteners just before Christmas at Sandy Hook Elementary, and deaths of high schools in Parkland that launched a national gun safety movement, and the slaughter of children and adults in Uvalde, Texas, then there no is no single incident that is going to move the needle for them.

The rest of the nation sees with their own eyes each day what Rachel Maddow described. The mass shooting epidemic is getting worse.

The longer our nation allows these rampages to continue. The worse the problem becomes.

Of course, we need to protect the Second Amendment, but most responsible gun owners aren’t plotting and carrying out mass shootings. There is a middle ground between Second Amendment absolutism and taking action to protect as many people as possible from losing their lives in mass shootings.

When the American people traditionally see a problem, they will elect people who will act to solve that problem. If voters make stopping mass shootings an electoral priority, they will save lives by electing candidates who will take action instead of special interest money.

Senate Republicans offered tepid disagreement with Trump’s decision to glorify insurrectionists at his Waco, TX rally.

NBC News reported:

“People who violated the law should be prosecuted. And they have been,” Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, who previously held the No. 2 spot in Senate Republican leadership, told NBC News.

“I just frankly don’t understand this, you know, retrospective look,” he said. “When it comes to running for president or any other office, people don’t want you to relitigate all your grievances in the past. They want to know what your vision for the future is. And so I don’t think it’s a formula for success.”

“January 6 was one of the worst days in American history. Everybody’s entitled to due process,” he (Sen. Lindsey Graham) said, adding that “if you’re trying to suggest that those who were involved in January the 6th are some kind of hero? No.”

“There will be no effort on my part to whitewash January 6,” he added.

Trump firmly aligned himself with the insurrectionists by playing his ‘song’ recorded with the J6 Choir. Trump also used his speech to defend the insurrection and the insurrectionists. 

Most of the Senate Republicans that NBC News talked to were more worried about Trump relitigating issues from the past instead of looking toward the future.

The Senate Republicans seemed more concerned about Trump’s behavior could impact their chances of taking back the Senate in 2024 instead of what it means for the country to have a former president who appears to be voicing his support for an attempt to overthrow the government.

The reason why Trump remains the favorite to prevail in the 2024 Republican presidential primary is that most elected Republicans are still reluctant to directly and personally speak out against the former president.

Until Republicans can directly confront Trump by name, he will remain in charge of the Republican Party.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) called President Biden a fool and demanded that his Secret Service protection get taken away after the Nashville school shooting.

Greene tweeted her statement:

Rep. Greene’s solution to the nation’s epidemic of mass shootings is to give even more people easier access to guns. Greene attacked Biden for the existence of gun-free school zones because if there is one policy move that would definitely increase gun violence at schools it would be to end the gun-free school zone designation.

How does taking away Biden’s Secret Service protection prevent mass shootings?

It doesn’t, but it does create a distraction to take away from the record that Greene and Republicans have of making it easier for mass shooters to kill more people through increasing the availability of deadly firearms to all.

Greene’s call for removal of Biden’s Secret Service protection doesn’t address the real issue.

The level of hatred that Rep. Greene has for the President Of The United States is so immense that she was incapable of controlling herself, acting like an elected official, and putting the trauma of the families who lost loved ones first.

Uvalde showed that a good guy with a gun does not stop anything if law enforcement doesn’t intercept the shooter. The shooting in Nashville was not even worse than it was because the police arrived very quickly and acted.

The NRA talking point about a good guy with a gun is not public policy. It is a marketing slogan for gun manufacturers.

Rep. Greene’s comments emphasize the point that Republicans don’t want to take policy steps that would lower the risk of mass shootings.

The GOP is more interested in using their version of the Second Amendment to turn out their voters in elections than saving lives by taking action on guns.
