Dundee U 1 – 1 St Mirren

Dundee United and St Mirren had to settle for share of the spoils after a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Tannadice.
The hosts took an early lead through striker Steven Fletcher but St Mirren equalised after the break thanks to Mark O’Hara penalty.
United hit the woodwork in stoppage time but could not find a winner.
The result leaves the Tangerines rooted to the bottom of the table but they are now two points behind Ross County while St Mirren have dropped to seventh.
United made a dream start, opening the scoring in just the third minute when Fletcher latched onto a headed clearance from St Mirren defender Richard Taylor, before flicking the ball up to volley home from the edge of the box past Buddies ‘keeper Trevor Carson.
The hosts’ tails were up and Aziz Behich then tried his luck with an audacious 25-yard shot that flew just past Carson’s left-hand post.
St Mirren were struggling to recover from going a goal behind so early, failing to put any pressure on the home goal.
That finally changed in the 24th minute when Curtis Main found space for himself in the United box but his shot flew straight at ‘keeper Mark Birighitti who easily gathered.
That sparked a sustained period of pressure for the Buddies but they could not create any clear-cut opportunities.
Instead, it was the hosts who were presented with an opening when Jamie McGrath swung a corner in from the right with the ball falling for Fletcher, but the former Scotland striker could only send his close-range shot over the bar.
The Buddies were the first to threaten after the break in the 56th minute when Greg Kiltie hit a cross from the right to the onrushing O’Hara but the St Mirren skipper’s goalbound shot was blocked by Ryan Edwards.
St Mirren did have the ball in the back of the net shortly after but Taylor’s headed effort was ruled out for offside, a decision confirmed by VAR.
However, St Mirren equalised in the 74th minute. Main went down in the United box under a challenge from Loick Ayina with referee Craig Napier pointing to the spot and O’Hara stepping up to hit the penalty straight down the middle past the diving Birighitti.
The hosts had a great opportunity to take the lead once more immediately after but Behich blasted over at the back post.
Deep in stoppage time, home substitute Kai Fotheringham had a chance for glory but his effort hit the post with United then having another great opportunity when Carson palmed away a Mathew Cudjoe shot and Ilmari Niskanen smashed the rebound into the stand.
What’s next?
Dundee United return to Scottish Premiership action after the international break away to Rangers on April 1.
St Mirren are at home to Livingston on the same day. Both matches kick-off at 3pm.

England Women: Sarina Wiegman recalls goalkeeper Hannah Hampton and defender Esme Morgan | Football News

Sarina Wiegman has handed recalls to Hannah Hampton and Esme Morgan while uncapped Lucy Parker also returns to the fold as the Lionesses prepare for back-to-back fixtures against Brazil and World Cup co-hosts Australia in April.
Dropping out from February’s squad are the injured Emily Ramsey along with Lotte Wubben-Moy, Katie Zelem and Ebony Salmon.
Chelsea forward Fran Kirby continues to be absent as she recovers from a knee injury, while Bethany England also misses out despite scoring five goals in six appearances for new club Tottenham.
Wiegman said: “We are getting closer to the World Cup and I can’t think of two better games to assess our progress. After these games, there will be less than three months until we fly to the tournament and we must make every second on and off the pitch count.
“For us as a technical staff this will be the last chance to see the players within our England environment before we come together for the final preparation phase in June. And these two matches will be two real tests to see where we are at.”
The Lionesses have not faced Australia since October 2018 when Kirby scored in a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage.
The last meeting with Brazil was in October 2019 at the Riverside Stadium when Debinha scored twice for the visitors, before England’s late consolation in a 2-1 defeat.

Anthony Barry: Chelsea and Bayern far apart in agreeing compensation for assistant to join Thomas Tuchel’s staff | Football News

Chelsea and Bayern Munich remain far apart over agreeing compensation for Anthony Barry to join Thomas Tuchel’s coaching staff.
Bayern have approached Chelsea about taking their assistant coach after Tuchel expressed an interest in bringing him into his new set-up.
Chelsea have made their position and expectations clear to Bayern for Barry to be released from his contract, and nothing has yet been agreed between the clubs.
But amid the uncertainty, Barry and Chelsea have agreed that he will not attend Cobham until the situation is resolved either way.
Chelsea have a list of potential replacements should he ultimately leave for the Bundesliga champions.
The Chelsea players return to training on Tuesday following international duty ahead of their clash with Aston Villa on Saturday at Stamford Bridge.
Barry is a highly thought-of coach who has also worked with Robert Martinez and the Belgium national team, the Republic of Ireland team under Stephen Kenny, and Paul Cook at Wigan Athletic before joining Chelsea in 2020.
