Wolves 2 – 4 Leeds
Leeds moved out of the Premier League relegation zone thanks to a thrilling 4-2 win against Wolves at Molineux.
Jack Harrison put Javi Gracia’s side ahead after six minutes and when Luke Ayling and substitute Rasmus Kristensen – seconds after coming on – extended the lead in the second half, the points looked to be secure.
But a Wolves comeback followed with a stunning goal from Jonny and a deflected effort from Matheus Cunha putting the game back in the balance. Jonny’s subsequent red card halted the home side’s momentum and Rodrigo’s goal finally sealed it.
Gracia’s team are up to 14th in the Premier League table just one place and one point behind Julen Lopetegui’s Wolves. It is they who will be the more nervous after this showing, a second straight defeat that leaves them only three points clear of the relegation zone.
VAR controversy late on
The latter stages of the game were disjointed following a series of VAR reviews, the first leading to Jonny’s red card after the player had initially been given a yellow card by referee Michael Salisbury.
The second was more controversial as Salisbury had been instructed by the VAR to check for a foul on Adama Traore in the build-up to Rodrigo’s goal. Marc Roca pulled the winger’s shirt but the referee appeared to decide it was not significant enough to disallow the goal.
It sparked scenes of anger and frustration among those on the Wolves bench with Matheus Nunes receiving a red card despite not featuring in the game.
How Leeds won it
Wilfried Gnonto was the brightest player on the pitch in the early stages of the game, tormenting the defenders on the left flank. His cut back was just asking to be fired into the net and Harrison did just that, beating Jose Sa with a high shot away to the goalkeeper’s left.
Cunha’s second-half goal ended a streak of over a year since a striker scored a Premier League goal for Wolves but they were wasteful once more. Daniel Podence, Pedro Neto and Nelson Semedo all spurned good chances before the break.
They were punished for that early in the second half when Luke Ayling found space at the far post to nod in Roca’s right-wing corner. When Kristensen came on to promptly dispossess Jonny and slot into the corner of the net, it should have put Leeds in total control.
The game just never felt like that and Wolves’ comeback was not a huge surprise, even if the nature of the goals was dramatic. Illan Meslier came out of his box to sweep up but then saw the ball deposited back over his head from long range by Jonny.
Cunha’s deflected shot then wrong-footed Meslier and Wolves looked in good shape to get something from the game with Molineux rocking. Jonny’s red card changed that, a studs-up foul on Ayling after he lost control of the ball.
It was a mess after that with the temperature up on the pitch and on the benches. But in the aftermath, though Wolves were blaming the referee, they will reflect on their own sloppiness. For Leeds, it feels like a huge day in their season.

- Wolves’ Jonny scored from 41 yards against Leeds, the furthest distance a player has scored from in the Premier League since Wayne Rooney’s 58-yard strike for Everton against West Ham in November 2017.
- Jonny also became the first Wolves player to both score and be sent off in a Premier League game and the first in any league game for the Wanderers since Chris Iwelumo against Preston in September 2008.
What’s next?
Wolves are back in action after the international break with an away game against Nottingham Forest on April 1, while Leeds face a testing trip to leaders Arsenal on the same afternoon.

Leading flat jockey Hollie Doyle will make her return to riding on Friday at Newcastle ahead of this weekend’s Lincoln meeting at Doncaster, live on Sky Sports Racing.
The Group One-winning rider has been out of the saddle since January following an elbow injury sustained in a fall at Wolverhampton.
Doyle enjoyed another memorable season in 2022 with over 150 winners, partnering Nashwa to a first Classic victory as well as landing another Royal Ascot success on Bradsell and further glory on star stayer Trueshan.
She is set to make her return at Newcastle, taking the ride on Rhythm And Hooves in the 5:50pm race, ahead of Saturday’s opening flat turf meeting of the year at Doncaster.
Some of her rides include Richard Spencer’s Revich in the lucrative Lincoln Handicap, as well chances on Wilderness Girl in the Cammidge Trophy and the classy Tempus in the Doncaster Mile.
“It’s been a frustrating time on the sidelines, but it was great to receive the green light to return,” said the Sky Sports Racing ambassador.
“I’ve been back at Oaksey House this morning, and the team there have been fantastic right the way through my recovery.
“I’ll be riding out this week and am looking forward to getting back in the saddle at Newcastle on Friday and on Lincoln day at Doncaster and kicking on from there.”

Sarina Wiegman has handed recalls to Hannah Hampton and Esme Morgan while uncapped Lucy Parker also returns to the fold as the Lionesses prepare for back-to-back fixtures against Brazil and World Cup co-hosts Australia in April.
Dropping out from February’s squad are the injured Emily Ramsey along with Lotte Wubben-Moy, Katie Zelem and Ebony Salmon.
Chelsea forward Fran Kirby continues to be absent as she recovers from a knee injury, while Bethany England also misses out despite scoring five goals in six appearances for new club Tottenham.
Wiegman said: “We are getting closer to the World Cup and I can’t think of two better games to assess our progress. After these games, there will be less than three months until we fly to the tournament and we must make every second on and off the pitch count.
“For us as a technical staff this will be the last chance to see the players within our England environment before we come together for the final preparation phase in June. And these two matches will be two real tests to see where we are at.”
The Lionesses have not faced Australia since October 2018 when Kirby scored in a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage.
The last meeting with Brazil was in October 2019 at the Riverside Stadium when Debinha scored twice for the visitors, before England’s late consolation in a 2-1 defeat.

Chelsea and Bayern Munich remain far apart over agreeing compensation for Anthony Barry to join Thomas Tuchel’s coaching staff.
Bayern have approached Chelsea about taking their assistant coach after Tuchel expressed an interest in bringing him into his new set-up.
Chelsea have made their position and expectations clear to Bayern for Barry to be released from his contract, and nothing has yet been agreed between the clubs.
But amid the uncertainty, Barry and Chelsea have agreed that he will not attend Cobham until the situation is resolved either way.
Chelsea have a list of potential replacements should he ultimately leave for the Bundesliga champions.
The Chelsea players return to training on Tuesday following international duty ahead of their clash with Aston Villa on Saturday at Stamford Bridge.
Barry is a highly thought-of coach who has also worked with Robert Martinez and the Belgium national team, the Republic of Ireland team under Stephen Kenny, and Paul Cook at Wigan Athletic before joining Chelsea in 2020.
